About the Centre
Kanchi Mamunivar Government Institute for Post graduate Studies and Research(KMGIPSR), Puducherry is a Government Institution, started in the year 1989 with the objective of imparting higher education at Postgraduate and Research level to the urban and rural society. It is affiliated to Pondicherry University, offering 13 PG Courses, 11 M.Phil Programmes and 8 Ph.D Programmes in Arts, Humanities, Commerce and Science disciplines. The Centre was originally named as Centre for PG Studies and was renamed as Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Postgraduate Studies (KMCPGS) in 1994 and Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Postgraduate Studies (KMCPGS) was renamed as Kanchi Mamunivar Government Institute for Post graduate Studies and Research(KMGIPSR)in 2019 and is recognized under 2f and 12B of the UGC Act, 1956 with effect from 1993.
The Centre made a paradigm shift in the curriculum adopting “Choice Based Credit System” (CBCS) during 2012-13 for all PG programmes and during 2013-14 for all M.Phil programmes. The shift from the old system of curriculum to “Choice Based Credit System” enabled both the students and the faculties more vibrant and versatile in improving the standard and quality of knowledge and skill. The autonomy of evolving pedagogy has been most suited to the need of the industry and employment market at large thereby it enabled open gates for industry-institution-interface for all the students and as a result industrial visits and internship have been implemented as important parts of curriculum.
In the first cycle, the Centre was accredited at B++ Grade on 21st September 2005 and was re-accredited at “A” Grade with CGPA of 3.19 on four point scale on 5th January, 2013 in Cycle 2. In the 3rd cycle of NAAC reaccreditation, the Centre was reaccredited at B++ Grade on 28th March 2019.Based on the excellent academic and research performance of the Centre, the University Grants Commission (UGC) conferred the Centre with Autonomous Status for a period of six years from the academic year 2007-08 to 2012-13. It was further extended for the second term on 19th June, 2014 for six years from 2013-14 to 2018-19 and now for the third term it is further extended on 9th December 2019 for five years. Further, the Centre was bestowed with the status of “College With Potential for Excellence” (Phase-I) on 18th March, 2010 for a period of five years from 2009-10 to 2013-14 and got extension of the status of “College With Potential for Excellence” (Phase-II) on 31st January, 2014 for a period of five years i. e. from 2014-15 to 2018-19. Kanchi Mamunivar Government Institute for Post-Graduate Studies and Research (Autonomous), Puducherry has achieved 56th position in All India NIRF Ranking-2020 by MHRD among all the Colleges in India
After getting the Autonomous status during the year 2007, the Centre has made a drastic change in the curriculum and syllabus, incorporating abreast of the current changes in science, technology, taxation, laws, government policy, industrial policy, etc., which made the students at PG level and M.Phil level compete with the students of higher learning institutions (HLIs) of national as well as international repute across the states in India and elsewhere.

- Higher education is fundamental importance of the country, as it is a powerful tool to build knowledge based society higher education is generally understood to cover teaching, research and extension. Scientific, technological advancement and economic growth of a country are dependent on the higher education n system. The factors that contribute to quality education in higher education institutions are the adoption of global pedagogy standards, education infrastructure, study environment, quality of students, and quality of faculty.
- This institute ensures access to all sections of students aspiring for higher studies and research qualifications, especially the economically weaker sections, without any discrimination on the basis of gender and religion by enhancing the quality of education offered and making the teachers and administration accountable.
- The determinants of quality education include factors such as teacher motivation, discipline, leadership, socio-economic level of families, language spoken at home and the availability of infrastructural facilities.

It is the goal of the institute to promote quality and social justice, and to reduce social and cultural differences through diffusion of education. It is desired to foster in the teachers and students and through them in the society generally, the attitudes and values needed for developing good citizens.
